non-hardening type suitable for exterior use,
(b)
selected for their ability to resist the effects of weathering, and
(c)
compatible with and adhere to the substrate to which they are applied. (See Note A-9.27.4.2.(1))

(b)
ASTM C920, “Standard Specification for Elastomeric Joint Sealants,”
(c)
ASTM C1184, “Standard Specification for Structural Silicone Sealants,” or

ASTM C1311, “Standard Specification for Solvent Release Sealants.”

Backer rod shall conform to ASTM C1330, “Standard Specification for Cylindrical Sealant Backing for Use with Cold Liquid-Applied Sealants.” (See Note A-9.27.4.2.(1))
